A simple Freehand Flower kolam done in the evening. Normally in the evenings, I stick to small freehand kolams or not more than 7 dot kolams. Evening Kolam - During summer vacation in my grandma's village, I used to get ready with a broom by 3pm to clean the big front yard and sprinkled water to prepare the mudfloor. I drew kolams which I had learnt the day before. Did lots of practice on paper then proceeded to show my talent on floor, still the lines zigzagged to one end to the other. For a 8 year old girl, that was a great mission accomplished. And with great words from my Dad, sure I was on Cloud Nine.

Trace Concentric Guidelines on the Floor
Anchor a piece of thread at your center point and lightly trace 3 to 5 concentric circular guidelines with faint chalk on the clean floor.
Place the Central Core Flower
Position a magnificent whole lotus blossom or a tight, dense rosette of vibrant yellow marigold petals at the very center as the visual anchor.
Layer Concentric Petal Rings Outward
Fill each concentric ring with contrasting fresh petals (orange marigold, pink rose, purple orchids, and white jasmine), packing petals closely for a rich velvety texture.
Crown Perimeter with Oil Lamps
Surround the outer floral rim with dark green mango leaves or bilva leaves. Place glowing brass or terracotta oil lamps (agal vilakku) at cardinal compass points.
